The Challenge: IT Department network file space limitations
Colleges are just like businesses - they have IT departments that are always trying to reduce the amount of data that needs to be supported and maintained. While these "clean your folders" requests are needed, some departments truly need more space and the marketing and media departments are usually the culprits that are Gigabit greedy. This media department supervisor was told to reduce the files on the network but still needed to share large files with coworkers on and off campus and needed a solution that could make everyone happy.
The Solution: Simple Network Attached Storage
A USRobotics Mini NAS Adapter was installed at the department office with an external hard drive from the office. Files were transferred from the temporary network location to the new NAS, reducing the files on the main network but still providing access to the department files. Media department employees and interns now can easily access a shared mapped drive.
When other employees or contractors need access to files, they each have specific secure logins allowing them access to only certain folders that the owner has specified. No more worries about other people gaining access to financial information or sensitive projects or clients.
The NAS adapter easily converted a previously used hard drive into network attached storage, without pricey additional drives or complicated configuration. While providing easy, quick access to files on the local network the Mini NAS also provided an easy way to share a printer and access the files while not at the main office. The NAS adapter allows flexibility needed for this small business.
