How to set up a printer with USR808700:

A USB printer can be connected to the USR8700 Network Attached Storage (Serial ATA 4-Drive NAS) and used as a network printer if you are using an operating system that supports printing to an Internet Printing Protocol (IPP)-based printer. Windows XP, 2000, Server 2003, Vista, 7, and Server 2008 have built-in support for this function.

Step One: Local Printer Installation

Note: If your printer and printer software is already installed on your computer, skip to Step Two: Print Server Configuration.

Before configuring your printer on the print server, it is important to install it on your computer using the drivers provided by the printer manufacturer.

  1. Plug your USB printer into one of the USB ports on your computer.
  2. Install the printer by following the installation instructions included with your printer.
  3. Print a test page to ensure that the printer is working properly.

Step Two: Print Server Configuration

  1. Plug the thin rectangular end of the USB cable into 1 of the USB ports on the back of NAS.
  2. Connect the power supply to your printer and turn your printer on.
  3. The product immediately recognizes the new peripheral device just connected; the fact that USB led is turned off is correct.
  4. Go to the 8700 user interface. Launch a Web browser. In the location or address line type 192.168.0.101 and press Enter.

Note: If you have modified your NAS's IP address, enter the new IP address instead of 192.168.0.101

  5. When the user name and password window appears, type in the user name and the password you created. Click OK to load the NAS user interface.
  6. In order to check that the printer has been correctly connected then click on advanced and then on USB (see images). All the devices connected by a USB cable will then be shown on this page, note which port the printer is on: usbprint1 or usbprint2. This information will be used in step 11.

    choose advanced choose usb

  7. Note: Perform the following steps to set up your printer. You will need to do this on every computer that is connected to your network and wants to be able to access the printer.

  8. Windows 7 Users: Click Windows Start and then Devices and Printers.
Windows XP Users: Click Windows Start and then Printers and Faxes.
Windows 2000 Users: Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Printers.

  9. Click Add Printer.

  10. The Add Printer Wizard will launch. Click Next.
  11. Choose the radio button labeled A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer. Click Next.
  12. Select Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network. In the URL field, enter the Printer location address recorded during step 5 (\\192.168.0.101\usbprint1 or \\192.168.0.101\usbprint2). Click Next.
  13. Note: The URL information is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as it is listed on the Printer Location section on the NAS's Status page. If you have modified the IP address of your NAS, then use your NAS's IP address in place of 192.168.0.101.

  14. Select the manufacturer and model of your printer. Click OK.

Note: If your printer does not appear in the list, please repeat Step One: Local Printer Installation.

  15. When prompted, select Yes to set this printer as your default printer. If prompted, you can choose to print a test page.

  16. You will be shown the information regarding your printer. Click Finish to complete the setup process.

Step Three: Verify the printer's connectivity

  1. Windows XP Users: Click Windows Start and then Printers and Faxes.
Windows 2000 Users: Click Windows Start, Settings, and then Printers.

  2. Verify that your printer is listed. Right-click on your printer and select Properties.

  3. Click Print Test Page.
