1. How do I check my modem's code date?

Answer:
Using a terminal program (such as PhoneTools, WinPhone, HyperTerminal, or ZTerm), type ATI7 and press ENTER. Depending on your modem, you will see a flash date and a flash revision, a code date and a code revision, or a supervisor date and a supervisor revision.

2. How do I know if V.92 is enabled in my modem?

Answer:
Open up a terminal software package (such as PhoneTools, WinPhone, HyperTerminal, or ZTerm), type ATI7 and press ENTER. This command displays the modem's configuration profile information. If V.92 is supported, V.92 will be listed on the options line.

3. Where can I make a V.92 connection with my V.92 modem?

Answer:
Contact your local ISP regarding V.92 support. USRobotics has a dial-in number that supports V.92 connections. The number is (847) 330-4569. Once connected, you will see a logon prompt. Type +++, wait for the "OK" response, and type ATI6. Click ENTER. Your connect speed will be shown next to Speed. The first entry indicates the downstream speed. The second entry indicates the upstream speed. Typing ATH will disconnect the modem.

4. What are the major features of V.92?

Answer:

Modem on Hold suspends your online session for incoming calls and returns you to your online activities after your conversation without the need to redial. This permits less intrusive use of a modem in the home and fuller utilization of a single phone line.

Note: This feature requires Call Waiting service from your local phone company and support from your ISP.

Quick Connect “remembers” line conditions from the previous connection and if the line conditions are similar, it shortens the training sequence, getting you online faster.

V.PCM Upstream increases the upstream communication speeds to up to 48,000 bits per second (V.90 upstream speeds were limited to 31,200 bps.). This feature makes the online experience faster and better for those who not only surf the Web, but also for those who send e-mail attachments, perform Web site administration, and more.

5. How do I disable V.92?

Note: We recommend that you not disable the V.92 features of your modem. If your ISP does not support V.92, your modem will automatically negotiate a V.90 connection. In the event that you still want to disable all or some of the features of V.92, follow the procedures below.

Answer:

To disable V.92, you must disable the following features:

  • Modem on Hold
  • Quick Connect
  • V.PCM Upstream

The default value for each of these commands is zero, and resetting the modem will restore the default settings.

To disable Modem on Hold:
In the Terminal window, type AT+PMH=1 and press ENTER.

Note: To completely disable call waiting tones from interrupting your online session, the preferred method is to include *70 in your dial string.

To disable Quick Connect:
In the Terminal window, type AT+PQC=3 and press ENTER.

To disable V.PCM Upstream:
In the Terminal window, type AT+PIG=1 and press ENTER.

To disable all three V.92 features at once:
In the Terminal window, type AT+PIG=1+PMH=1+PQC=3 and press ENTER.

Note: Windows TAPI programs will read the change from Extra Settings. If you use Windows TAPI to disable any of the V.92 features, the AT prefix is not needed before entering the command. For non-Windows TAPI programs, you may have to modify the program's modem init string.
