Technical Bulletin 3047 - 09/26/97
Configure Your System For PC Card Modems In Windows 9x

Bulletin Number 3047
"Configure Your System For PC Card Modems In Windows 9x"
Last Reviewed - August, 2000

Purpose

Our Applications Engineers recommend that you allow Windows 95 to configure Communications (COM) Port, Interrupt Request (IRQ) as well as Input Output (I/O) settings. However, you may find this information useful if you are using software that was designed previous to the release of Windows 95 or whenever you determine that you must configure your settings.

Basic Configurations

Windows 95 provides a default configuration for each COM port, as well as additional Basic Configurations that allow you to change the interrupt request (IRQ) settings used by your Communications (COM) port. You cannot change the input output (I/O) settings.

The tables below provide you with the settings associated with each Basic Configuration.

Basic Configuration I/O COM Port IRQ Setting
0000 03F8-03FF 1 4
0001 02F8-02FF 2 3
0002 03E8-03EF 3 4
0003 02E8-02EF 4 3

For Basic Configurations 0004 to 0007, you may change the IRQ settings.

Basic Configuration I/O COM Port IRQ Setting
0004 03F8-03FF 1 manually configurable
0005 02F8-02FF 2 manually configurable
0006 03E8-03EF 3 manually configurable
0007 02E8-02EF 4 manually configurable

Basic Configurations 0004-0007 allow for manually configurable IRQ settings. Our Applications Engineers suggest that you allow Windows 95 to set these. Windows 95 tends to choose settings that may be higher than older, 16-bit oriented software may recognize. So, after allowing Windows 95 to set them, try a lower setting such as 3 if you have further performance problems. You can change the IRQ setting by highlighting IRQ and clicking on "Change Setting". (See Below)

Change IRQ Settings

Follow these steps to modify your modem IRQ settings.

  1. Select Control Panel and double click System.

  2. Choose the Device Manager tab and set to View devices by type.

  3. Click Modem and then click your PC Card.

  4. Click Properties button and choose Resources tab.

  5. Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings.

  6. Refer to the tables above to choose a configuration.

  7. In the Resource Settings box click on Interrupt Request and then click on Change Setting.

  8. Change Value, make sure there are no conflicts, and click on OK.

  9. Restart windows.
