FTP Usage

USRobotics suggests all non-anonymous (require login) ftp users to use a FTP client instead of an internet browser to view, download, and upload files. Browsers tend to cache files and can be troublesome when files get updated frequently. USRobotics suggests the following FTP clients:

Login information is available from your USRobotics Representative. For a complete walkthough of the login process, choose a client: SmartFTP Login Walkthrough or Fetch Login Walkthrough.

FTP Etiquette

Adding Folders and Files:

  • Keep names simple and easy to understand.
  • Do NOT use spaces, MAC users cannot see anything beyond the space; instead use dashes (-) or underscores (_). EXAMPLE: "USR Proctuct Info.pdf" should be "USR-Product-Info.pdf"
  • Make sure to put the new folders/files in the correct location. There are several different FTP logins and users have different access depending on which they are using.
  • Clean up! DELETE old files and folders. No one else knows when the files are no longer needed!
Sharing FTP logins:
  • Understand what each login is used for, and give it out accordingly.
  • Do not share write access logins with external partners, there is a specific login for partner uploads.

Client Walkthoughs

SmartFTP Users:
If using SmartFTP, your login will look like the image below. When going to a new ftp site, type in the login information that was provided to you.

When returning to a ftp select it from the drop down menu.

After selecting or adding the ftp and pressing Enter or hitting the connect button, you will start the login process. A window is available to track your progress. The image below is a successful login.

Once you are in, you can browse folders, download files, and if you have write access, you can move files by dragging and dropping.

Fetch Users:
If using Fetch, your login will look like the image below.
